New Report Finds Young
Even so, how many students are really hooking up? According to the Harvard Crimson ’s senior class survey, nearly one-fourth of graduating seniors are virgins. A new report released today suggests that many young people struggle with developing healthy romantic relationships and that rates of misogyny and sexual harassment among teens and young adults are alarmingly high. This focus on the hook-up culture also obscures two much bigger issues that our research suggests many young people are struggling with: forming and maintaining healthy and fulfilling romantic relationships and dealing with widespread misogyny and sexual harassment. Unfortunately, we also found that most adults appear to be doing very little to address these serious problems. Weissbourd and his team also spoke with many adults who are key to young people, including parents, teachers, sport coaches, and counselors. In light of the report findings, Making Caring Common developed the following tips for parents and other adults to help guide these important conversations with young people. In interviews, professors and students at Harvard discussed their views on hookup culture and its effect on campus culture. Lisa Wade, a sociology professor at Occidental College, discusses hookup culture as something that is institutionalized, embedded into the structure of the American college in her new book American Hookup. She says that hooking up itself is not new to colleges or humans, but hookup culture is. In interviews with Harvard College students, the presence of a routine was evident.

Hence, hooking up acts as both a staple of the college experience and a metric through which experiences can be measured. On Monday night, two hours after Indy storyboard ended, I downloaded Tinder. I chose my favorite photos that I felt depicted my best features: my silly personality and cheeky smile, obviously. Having heard the Tinder horror stories from my girl friends, I opted to make it clear in my bio that I was on the app for investigative journalism, not for a fast hookup. Out of every five men that came up on my feed, at least two were from Harvard. I recognized close friends, classmates, TFs, and even a few Indy members. I swiped through entire friend groups that had all used the same film photo in their profiles. David explained that he thinks there is less stigma around apps like Hinge and Bumble because Tinder is more well-known for encouraging hook-up culture.
